Dubai Water Canal

Dubai Water Canal

Dubai Water Canal is a 3.2km long waterway that extends from the Creek in Old Dubai through Business Bay, before finding its way back to the Arabian Gulf.

Dubai is one of the most popular destinations in the world. It has transformed a lot over the years yet not missing out on the tradition and its cultural heritage. The country never fails to amaze its visitors by everything it has to offer. Be it the luxurious hotels or the best shopping malls or the top attractions to visit, it always stands unique. Though Dubai has so many places for one to realize it’s worth visiting, it has proved its beauty by the Dubai water canal yet again.

The man-made canal, which opened in 2016, meanders through the centre of the city, transforming the face of Downtown Dubai and turning it into a waterfront destination. Nearby, you will find the magnificent V Hotel and Hilton Dubai as well as the captivating aquatic show, La Perle DXB.

An extension of the famous Deira Creek, the Dubai Canal is divided into three networks: The Water Network, Green Network and Public Realm.

THE WATER NETWORK

The water network of the canal comprises three water bodies. The Dubai Canal, which covers a distance of 2.9 km and connects Business Bay to the Arabian Gulf. The Arabian Gulf coastline, which has a beautiful beachfront. The final part of the canal is the Crystal Lagoon at Safa Park.

THE GREEN NETWORK

This network connects Safa Park to the new Jumeirah Beach Park.

THE PUBLIC REALM

This is the surrounding area around the canal which is being developed. There are many restaurants and recreational facilities close to this area, in the neighbouring district of Jumeirah.

Explore the city along the Dubai Water Canal

Visitors can run, walk and cycle along the 6.4km waterfront on either side of the canal. Hop aboard one of the many ferry and abra rides that make their way across the canal's calm waters for an especially leisurely afternoon.

Also adorning the waterway are five pedestrian bridges, offering key vantage points to take in Dubai’s glimmering skyline. One of these, known for its distinctive purple-hued archway, was renamed Tolerance Bridge in November 2017, honouring the 22nd International Day of Tolerance.

There are even more plans to develop the public space surrounding Dubai Water Canal with retail shops, a marina, a boardwalk and recreational areas, making the lifestyle development a flurry of new activities and attractions.

Some of the most amazing things about the Dubai Water Canal to behold:

  • It has a man-made waterfall and is completely motion-operated and pumps water in the same flow throughout.

  • It is so impressive to one’s eyes where the canal meets Sheikh Zayed Road.

  • The waterfall is visible even from the Promenade.

  • For those fitness lovers out there, it has a 3 km track for running and 12 km for cycling.

  • They have constructed three pedestrian canals across the canals, thus giving an awesome sight. It even has elevators on both sides.

  • In addition to its fascinating beauty surrounded by Jumeriah, Business bay and more, it also provides access to the city by its boat system.

Five hotspots by the Dubai Water Canal

1. Treat yourself to tickets for La Perle

A visual masterpiece by legendary director Franco Dragone, La Perle takes theatrics to another level. With elaborate costumes, high-tech projections, amazing acrobatics, superb stunts and a storyline that’s inspired by the vibrancy of Dubai, this is a show that dazzles audiences night after night. All the action takes place on a custom-made ‘aqua stage’ that sees it flood with water and drain in mere seconds, setting the scene for daring water-themed feats, including heart-dropping dives from as high as 25m.

2.  Dine and unwind at Al Habtoor City

Home to three five-star hotels, a dining destination, and the La Perle by Dragone theatre, Al Habtoor City is a buzzing hotspot. Restaurants here serve the best in world flavours, from zingy Mexican specialities at Zoco to South African steaks at The City Grill, and Parisian pastries at BQ – French Kitchen. Afterwards, a popular stop is the V Lounge on the 30th floor of V Hotel, where an upbeat tempo coupled with sky-high city views never fails to impress.

3. Spend time in the sunshine at Safa Park

Safa Park is one of the city’s original green spaces and a local favourite. With a running track, dedicated fields for football and basketball, and plenty of play areas for little ones, you won’t be disappointed. Come early to make the most of the sunshine. We recommend packing your own picnic basket or using one of the public barbecue grilling stations to light up mid-day meals. When the kids get tired of the monkey bars and swings, have them hop aboard the train which snakes its way across the park.

4. See the city from new perspectives

The iconic arc-shaped bridge is a popular one – in 2017 it was named the Tolerance Bridge in commemoration of the 22nd International Day of Tolerance.
